Université Laval, September 12, 2015 – Rookie kicker Dominic Lévesque gave the Laval Rouge et Or their second consecutive victory with his foot on Saturday as he booted a 9-yard overtime field goal to give Laval a 27 24 victory over the Sherbrooke Vert & Or.
Lévesque was the beneficiary of a 33 yard drive orchestrated after the Rouge et Or defense neutralized the Vert et Or offence. Maxime Boutin rushed for 38 yards taking them to the goal line.
Earlier, Vert et Or kicker Mathieu Hébert missed a 42 yard field goal in the first overtime drive, paving the way for a Laval victory. It also marked their 100th regular season for the Rouge et Or.
Lévesque also missed a field goal late in the fourth quarter; his attempt from 40 yards went wide, propelling the two teams into overtime.
Laval got on the scoreboard early in the game. Benoit Gagnon-Brousseau caught a pass and dashed down the field for a 72 yard major on the second play of the game. Hugo Richard scored the second touchdown of the contest on a one-yard run after a Vert et Or field goal. But the Vert et Or, inspired by some 10,000 spectators, responded in the second quarter and after 30 minutes, the two teams were tied 14-14.
Then in the third quarter, a wounded Richard, had to relinquish his duties to Marc-Antoine Langevin. The latter succeeded with his first career touchdown pass in the college ranks by connecting with Felix Faubert-Lussier in the end zone for a 9 yard touchdown score which put Laval ahead 24-17.
No points were recorded in the fourth quarter until Vert et Or pivot Jérémi Roch found Frédérick Caron deep in the end zone for a touchdown with under two minutes to play in the game.
Lévesque however played hero in overtime, allowing Laval to maintain a perfect record against Sherbrooke.
The Rouge et Or got 500 offense yards, including 278 through the air, while Sherbrooke had 442 yards, including 384 passing yards.

RECORD RUN FOR HYMAN-HAMILTON NOT ENOUGH AS GAITERS FALL TO STINGERS

SHERBROOKE, Que. – Bishop’s Gaiters running back and kick-returner Jamall Hyman-Hamilton ran into the record books with a 112-yard kickoff return for a touchdown on Saturday. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough as the Concordia Stingers topped the Gaiters 38-18 on Coulter Field in week two of RSEQ University Football.
The highlight run by Hyman-Hamilton (Toronto), a transfer from Concordia, came with 8:50 remaining in the game and gave Bishop’s life. It cut the visitors lead to just 10. The 112-yard kickoff return is the longest in Bishop’s history and second longest ever in the RSEQ. On the ensuing kickoff it appeared as though Ryan Hector (Brampton, Ont.) recovered the Gaiters onside attempt; however a penalty negated it and gave Concordia the ball. It was the last momentum Bishop’s had as the Stingers closed out the game with 10 unanswered points to make the final 38-18.
Hector for his part was all over the field. The senior finished the day with 3.5 tackles, two interceptions and a blocked punt.
Concordia wore down the Bishop’s defense that was determined to send the Gaiters faithful home with something to cheer about. The Stingers had the ball for 34:46 on offense and ran 69 plays while the Gaiters controlled the ball for 25:14 and mustered just 53 plays.
After a scoreless first quarter, Concordia opened the scoring 1:55 into the second with a 34-yard touchdown. Bishop’s answered with a pair of field goals off the foot of Vincent Dube (Montmagny, Que.). He connected from 19 and 37 yards respectively to put the Gaiters down 7-6 at halftime.
Bishop’s was able to score their first touchdown of the year in the third quarter thanks to quarterback Alexandre Bouffard (Sherbrooke, Que.) who scampered into the end zone from nine yards out. That major was sandwiched in between a pair of Concordia scores.
The Stingers scored their fourth touchdown of the game with 9:13 remaining to extend their advantage to 28-12. It was on the following kickoff when Hyman-Hamilton dashed 112 yards to pay dirt. Down by 10 the Gaiters elected to go for two unsuccessfully. It was as close as they got and the Stingers tacked on another touchdown and a field goal to make the final 38-18.
“I’m not pleased, however we had a few positives especially on special teams with Jamall’s return and Ryan’s blocked punt,” said Gaiters head coach Kevin Mackey. “Next week will be tough but we will take it one play at a time.”
The win is the Stingers second straight over the Gaiters after beating them in the season opener in 2014. The squads will meet again onOct. 17 in Montreal.
Next up for the Gaiters (0-2) they host the No.1 Laval Rouge et Or (2-0) on Coulter Field on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 1 p.m. Laval is coming off an overtime victory against the Sherbrooke Vert et Or (1-1) on Saturday.
Quick Stats: Both teams threw four interceptions, the Gaiters fumbled three times, losing two and Concordia put the ball down twice, losing one…Bishop’s was penalized 18 times resulting in 146 yards, while Concordia committed eight penalties for 65 yards…Concordia had 367 yards of total offence to Bishop’s 213.
