SMU head coaching search: Deja vu all over again

Did Yogi Berra work at Saint Mary’s?  Or does his famous quote characterize the search (again) for head coach in 2015 as compared to 2012?  In 2012 they had a total of 16 applicants and in 2015 they had less.

Four years ago, SMU administration and alumni dragged out the process into February and ended up choosing alumni after the President met with the last two candidates, Leroy Blugh and Perry Marchese.

That Athletic Director is gone (Steve Sarty – above picture) and that President is gone (Dr. Colin Dodds).  Since then, SMU has not had a full-time athletic director (back-to-back interim directors) and the team has fell on tough times to say the least.  0-16 the past two seasons.

Interim Head Coach AJ Tufford (below picture) has been putting in a yeoman effort, recruiting some top recruits including #CFC100 Kesean Bennett .  Should they not do the same thing Guelph did and appoint Tufford as the interim for the year and give him a try?  He has already outperformed the last four recruiting classes as of mid-January.

Did the lengthy job description scare off the top candidates?  Did administration and alumni not get the candidates they believed they were going to get?  Are they still waiting for other teams to make a move?  Or are they asking “What would Blake Nill do?”

Mount Allison wasted no time appointing a new head coach.  What is the wait St. Mary’s?
