“This is just the start fellas”, six words spoken by head coach Chris Bertoia, in an emotional post-game speech given to his players after an incredible 54-33 victory in game one of the 2017 OUA football season.

After two winless seasons, Bertoia earned his first U SPORTS victory as head coach of the black and gold and spoken in his words, this truly is just the beginning for Waterloo’s football program.

Almost an entirely new coaching staff, tremendous support from the University and a full commitment to recruiting and educating the student-athletes, a new era has begun for football at the University of Waterloo.

“Today was just one of those days I will never forget,” said an emotionally charged Chris Bertoia after the win.  “It has been a long two years but our coaching staff has stuck to the game plan and it all came to fruition in today’s victory.  The support from the University, the Department of Athletics and beyond has been amazing and to start off the season with a convincing win is very humbling and exciting.”

Waterloo’s last win came in their final game of 2014 as the black and gold edged York 32-31 and you have to go all the way back to 2007 when they last won a season opener, where they bested Toronto, 42-17.

Today’s victory was highlighted by one the most historic and memorable rookie performances as cornerback Tyrell Ford (Niagara Falls/) ran back not one but two punt returns, one for 98 yards and another highlight reel 100 yard major.  In just his first U SPORTS contest, Tyrell finished with 263 yards on eight returns and was also a factor defensively with 5.5 tackles.

Waterloo’s offence was firing on all cylinders today led by Lucas McConnell (Waterford) who went 7-for-13 with 113 passing yards and three touchdown passes while rookie Tre Ford (Niagara Falls/) went 7-for-9 for 50 yards and one touchdown pass.

Most of Waterloo’s damage however was done on the ground with 219 rushing yards compared to 186 for Windsor.  Tre Ford (Niagara Falls/) used his agility and speed and showed his bright future in the league with 14 carries for 108 yards while Brandon Metz (Cambridge/) had 83 including a 20 yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter that put the game out of reach as Waterloo went up 54-31.  Dion Pellerin (Abbotsford/) rounded out a strong Warriors ground game with 78 yards on 12 touches.

In the air, Waterloo was successful at finding the endzone, doing so four times by four different players.  Mitch Kernick (Elmira/) hauled in a 24 yard pass, the longest of the contest and finished with 80 yards in the air.  Richmond Nketiah (Brampton/), Gordon Lam (Kitchener/) and Blair Mckay were the other three Warriors receivers to put up six in Waterloo’s dominant win.

The story defensively was Waterloo’s second half performance allowing just five points in the 30 minutes of action while the Warriors put up 22 to cruise to the victory.

Second year linebacker continued where he left off last season with 9.5 tackles while another second year Michael Reid (Sault Ste. Marie/) was stellar with seven tackles.

Waterloo will look to make it a 2-0 start when they welcome the York Lions to Warrior Field on Labour Day Monday.  Kickoff is set for 1pm and the game can be seen live on OUA.tv.

BOX SCORE

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues football team dropped their season opener 39-0 to the defending Yates Cup champion Laurier Golden Hawks on Sunday, August 27 at University Stadium in Waterloo, Ont.

“We still have seven games left,” said Varsity Blues head coach Greg Gary. “We came into camp talking about preparation. I think part of what the team has to do is trust the process. We’ve seen Laurier play this same offence unsuccessfully and then they won the Yates Cup with it. Once it gels nicely, I think we will be successful.”

Damoy Robinson led all players with 12 tackles, while fellow third-year defensive back Nick Hallet had eight tackles on the day.

“Both of our halves [Damoy Robinson and Nick Hallett] played a great game,” added Gary. “They both held the edge. Those guys need to be play makers and make tackles and they did today.”

“Our defence has to stand on their heads when offence isn’t playing well. This can’t be special. This has to be an expectation that they play this well all of the time.”

Third-year Washington State transfer Connor Ennis went 9-for-22 for 58 yards in the loss. Sophomore receiver Nick Stadnyk made four catches for 24 yards. Fifth-year veteran Kaleb Leach led the Blues on the ground, rushing 12 times for 38 yards, while also making two kick returns for 36 yards in the loss.

The Varsity Blues are back in action Labour Day Monday as they host the Windsor Lancers at Varsity Stadium. Kick off is scheduled for 7 p.m. Advanced tickets are on sale here.

Ottawa (24), Guelph (21) – 2OT

Source: U Sports, uOttawa Gee-Gees

BOX SCORE

With a 24-21 double-overtime win on the road, facing a team with Yates Cup contention expectations—the Gee-Gees football team showed they’re ready for the new season.

Fifth-year kicker Lewis Ward has been coming up big for the Gee-Gees nearly his whole career. In the team’s season opener, Ward showed why he is one of the best kickers in the nation, as he was responsible for punching in 18 of the team’s points, six of which coming in overtime.

Despite his stellar effort, Ward is not solely responsible for the win. He shares the spotlight with the Gee-Gees defence that looked as promising as ever to start the year.

It was the defence that stifled Guelph early and gave the Ottawa offence time to find some footing. However, after fifth-year quarterback Victor Twynstra was injured in the second quarter of his first career start, the defence amped up another notch.

19-year-old freshman quarterback Alex Lavric was tossed into action for the Gee-Gees and was able to show why he was brought in to be the future under centre for Ottawa. Lavric was calm and composed, efficiently cutting up Guelph’s defence and putting his team in a position to score. Lavric finished 16-22 with 132 yards in his debut.

At this point, the team will have to evaluate Twynstra’s injury and see if he is fit to return to action next week. Although the offence was held without a touchdown, there are plenty of positives to take away from their effort.

Fifth-year seniors Nick Dagher and Tyler McLaren were favourite targets with 60 yards and 58 yards receiving, the pair will be essential to the team’s success going forward this year.

If the Gee-Gees defence can keep up their top-to-bottom strength, the offence will have the time to find their gear. Performances by Khadim Cheickh Mbaye, Jamie Harry, Luke Ffrench, and Ricardo Lubin were instrumental in the win.

The defence held Guelph quarterback James Roberts under 100 passing yards until deep in the fourth quarter, when a 74-yard pass resulted in the Gryphons’ first offensive touchdown.

Despite it not being a flashy win, the grit and determination displayed was the catalyst for the team’s win.

The Gee-Gees head back to Ottawa to prepare for their home opener against Queen’s on Sept. 4 at Gee-Gees Field. Kickoff for the game will be at 2 p.m. tickets are available at tickets.geegees.ca.

Western (66), York (3)

BOX SCORE

TORONTO – The Western Mustangs got their season off to a strong start on Sunday afternoon, scoring 34 first half points on their way to a 66-3 win over the York Lions at Alumni Field.

“We have lots of spots to improve, we have to play well,” said Mustangs head coach Greg Marshall. “We’re quick on defence, we’re not big, so we’re going to have to execute all the time. We’re going to have to be more consistent on offence than we were today. A lot of the time we just didn’t have any rhythm. We got big plays, but we didn’t have any rhythm. [There were] little consistency issues, but other than that I’m happy with the way the guys played today.”

Starting quarterback Chris Merchant threw for 221 yards with two touchdowns and one interception on 11 for 23 passing, while Stevenson Bone went 4-4 with 151 yards and both a rushing and passing touchdown.

Malik Besseghieur led the Mustangs receiving corps with 179 yards on six catches, including his first ever OUA touchdown on a 75-yard catch and run from Bone. Brett Ellerman had a strong game of his own, catching four passes for 118 yards and two touchdowns.

In total Western’s offence racked up 596 yards on 70 plays, while the purple and white defence limited York to 223 yards of total offence. Defensive back Bleska Kambamba had the defensive highlight of the day, picking off a pass from Brett Hunchak in the first quarter and taking it back 43 yards for the score.

Along with the overall result, coach Marshall was quick to point out the success of the special teams unit, as the Mustangs blocked two punts in the win, while Cole Majoros returned a punt 90-yards for a touchdown. Kicker Marc Liegghio tallied 14 points off of two field goals, seven extra points, and a single, while also averaging 43.4 yards per punt.

“Marc was hammering the ball today. He really kicked the ball well and put the ball in good spots,” said Marshall. “There were a couple of coverages that we need to get a little bit better, they returned a couple kicks early on us. Marc pinned them deep, but they got pretty good field position. That’s just young guys knowing their lines and their responsibilities, but our guys were aggressive on the [punt blocks], we broke a big run open…I thought overall this was an outstanding special teams game for us.”

After picking up three points from a Liegghio field goal on their first drive, the Mustangs picked up their first major of the day on a 54-yard pass from Merchant to Brett Ellerman midway through the opening quarter.

“I was coming across the middle and saw the safety drop, I knew Chris was going to be putting it on me pretty quick and he did, so as soon as I got it I put my foot in the ground and ran as fast as I could toward the end zone,” said Ellerman about his first touchdown of the day.

Kambamba extended that lead to 16-0 late in the frame, picking off a pass from Hunchak and taking it back 43 yards to close out the first quarter with a 16-point lead for the visiting side.

Special teams stole the show in the second quarter, with both Andrew Thurston and Fraser Sopik blocking Lions punts, while Majoros added one for the highlight reel, taking a punt back 90 yards for the score. Cedric Joseph recorded the Mustangs second touchdown of the quarter on a one-yard run, and a late field goal from the Lions set the scoreboard at 34-3 for Western at halftime.

Merchant and Ellerman connected for a touchdown again in the third, this time scoring on a 29-yard pass to make it 41-3 early in the frame. The Mustangs offence continued to roll, with a pair of short-yard runs from Bone and Joseph making it 55-3, before Besseghieur’s 75-yard touchdown made it 64-3 heading into the final quarter.

“It’s good for Malik,” said Marshall. “That’s the kind of game he needs, he’s got the ability, just needs confidence. That was a game that’s going to give him a lot of it.”

After scoring three touchdowns in less than six minutes to close out the third, the game’s rapid pace slowed down in the fourth, with the Mustangs adding two points off of a conceded safety from the Lions to close things out with a 66-3 win.

“It felt good being out there after a long training camp,” said Kambamba. “I’ve been preparing for this for a while, so it felt really good being out there.”

“There’s always negatives,” said Kambamba when asked if there was anything negative about Sunday’s game. “There’s always something we can fix, and that’s what we’re going to do tomorrow, watch our film and we’re going to get better. That’s the only thing we can do is get better because we have bigger fish to fry everywhere. Everybody wants the top and we’ve got to work for it.”

Next up for the Mustangs is their home opener on Monday, September 4, against the Guelph Gryphons. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at TD Stadium, and can be seen live on Rogers Cable 13 in London and OUA.tv. Fans can also tune in on CHRW Radio 94.9 FM and on Newstalk 1290 CJBK with Tom McConnell and legendary Mustangs coach Larry Haylor calling all the action.

BOX SCORE

The Mount Allison Mounties started the 2017 AUS football season with authority on Saturday, defeating the Acadia Axemen 64-23 in front of a jubilant home crowd at Alumni Field.  The game was a rematch of last year’s Subway AUS Semi-Final where the Mounties beat Acadia to advance to their fourth straight Loney Bowl.

After Acadia opened the scoring with a 26-yard field goal from Jarett Sammure just five minutes into the game, the Mounties came storming back with three straight scoring drives of their own.  The Mounties took a 7-3 lead when sophomore quarterback Jakob Loucks found junior receiver Malik Richards in the end zone from 15 yards out.  Four minutes later the Mounties used some play action to free up senior Jarred Rawlings and Loucks hit him for a 4 yard score.  The Mounties scored again on their next possession, this time driving 53 yards with the scoring play coming when Loucks hit junior Josh Hicks from 26 yards out.

Acadia answered back with a major of their own on the next possession, driving 90 yards on 4 plays. Cody Cluett found Eugene McMinns on the scoring play to bring the score to 21-10 for the Mounties. But the Mounties answered back on their very next possession, making it the 4th consecutive possession where they found the end zone.  Loucks drove his team 90 yards before AUS All-Star Chris Reid scored from 7 yards out.

Subway Player of the Game Phil Thompson picked off Cluett with 8 mins remaining in the 1st half and ran it back 29 yards for the major as the Mounties stretched their lead to 35-10.  Reid punched in his 2nd touchdown of the afternoon, this time from 1 yard out and the Mounties picked up a rouge point from Ryan Lambert to get to 43 points in the first half.  Acadia scored on a 16 yard Cordell Hastings reception in the last minute, leaving the score 43-16 at the half.

Hastings scored his 2nd touchdown of the afternoon early in the 3rd quarter to round out the scoring for Acadia.

The Mounties added another touchdown from Chris Reid, his 3rd of the day and a 30 yard touchdown from freshman Malcolm Miller. Miller’s first AUS touchdown came from the arm of Troy Downton who came in the game for Loucks late in the 4th.  Mounties kicker Ryan Lambert also hit a 46 yard field goal for the home side.

The Mounties were led offensively by 2016 U SPORTS national Rookie of the Year Jakob Loucks who went 29 of 36 for 402 yards and 3 touchdowns on the day.  The Mounties collected 34 first downs on 595 yards of total offense.  Reid had 41 yards and 3 touchdowns on 12 carries to start the year.  Eight different Mounties receivers had receptions of 10 yards or more on the day, with Richards leading the way with 126 yards on 7 catches and 1 touchdown.

For Acadia, Cluett was 21 of 39 for 247 yards. He threw for 3 touchdowns and also had 2 interceptions.  Dale Wright ran for 102 yards on 10 carries while Scott Watson led all Axemen receivers with 5 catches for 72 yards.

Mount Allison (1-0) will now travel to StFX (0-1) on Friday, September 1st for a rematch of the Loney Bowl from the past 3 years.  Acadia (0-1) will play Bishop’s in what will be the Gaiters first regular season action since joining the AUS last winter.

BOX SCORE

KINGSTON, Ont. (August 26, 2017) – The Queen’s Gaels (0-1) opened the regular season at Richardson Stadium hosting the Carleton Ravens (1-0). The crowd of 2,698 were treated to a wild finish that saw the Ravens snatch a win away from Queen’s 22-17.

GAME FLOW
The Ravens started off hot on the opening drive of the game as they moved the ball on the Gaels with a with a 50-yard pass completion from Michael Arruda to Phil Iloki to get the Ravens deep into the Gaels end. The Queen’s defence held strong, and the Ravens missed their field-goal attempt. Wesley Mann (Almonte, Ont.) returned the ball out to the Gaels 18-yard line.

A Queen’s two and out put the Ravens back in control for another 37-yard field goal attempt and this time Carleton kick Michael Domagala connected giving the Ravens a 3-0 lead.

After a pair of incomplete passes, Queen’s found their rhythm after a nine-yard reception and first down from Matteo Del Brocco (Kingsville, Ont.). Del Brocoo went on to receive two more from quarterback Nate Hobbs (Mississauga, Ont.), good for a total of 32-yards from the receiver during the first quarter. The Gaels levelled the score at 3-3 with a field goal from Nick Liberatore (Dartmouth, N.S.) from 20 yards out to close the first quarter.

The Ravens defence opened up the second quarter with a pair of fumble recoveries. The second was scooped up by Frederik Robitaille who returned it 22 yards for a touchdown. A few minutes later, the Ravens were able to add a safety to get ahead of the Gaels 12-3 as they took down Hobbs in the Gaels endzone for another sack.

In the final minute before the half, Mann provided the Gaels with a spark before heading into the dressing room as he wrapped up Arruda for a sack.

The third frame saw a needed resurgence from the Gaels offence after Hobbs found Del Brocco for 11 yards, Queen’s kept rolling offensively. Jonah Pataki (Wallaceburg, Ont.) rushed for eight more yards and once again, Hobbs connected with Del Brocco, this time for an 18-yard  Queen’s touchdown. Liberatore was able to convert for the extra point, as the Gaels closed the gap with the Ravens to make it 12-10.

The seasoned Gaels defensive line demonstrated their veteran grit, as Phoenix Grouse (Dartmouth, N.S.) recovered a fumble from Ravens quarterback Arruda. The Gaels drive went on to see a pair of big rushes from Hobbs and Pataki. Liberatore attempted a third field goal but just missed from the 44-yard line.

The Gaels came out flying in the last quarter. Hobbs and Del Brocco combined for another 50 yards through the air including another Gaels touchdown. Del Brocco was left untouched in the back of the Ravens endzone, and Hobbs hit the fourth year receiver putting Queen’s ahead 17-12.

The celebrations were short lived, however. Carleton came around to get a field goal and forced the Gaels offence deep in their end. In the last minute of play, Carleton was able to push forward for a touchdown to overcome the Gaels 22-17 and steal a victory.

FINAL SAY
“Through the air, I thought we were good. It was there for the taking, but we just couldn’t quite bring it home. I feel bad about that; I feel bad for the guys they played their guts out. The defence, tremendous effort, tremendous. We didn’t get much production on first down against this team; they’re pretty tough up front. ” – Pat Sheahan, Head Coach.

BY THE NUMBERS
306 – Passing yards for Nate Hobbs
9 – Total tackles by Nelkas Kwemo
132 – A career high in receiving yards from Matteo Del Brocco on nine receptions
111 – Rushing/receiving combined yards for Jonah Pataki

UP NEXT
Queen’s has a little over a week until their first road trip of the season. The Gaels will travel to Ottawa and face the Gee-Gees on Monday, September 4 at 2 pm. That game can be seen live on OUA.tv.

Laval (40), Sherbrooke (5)

BOX SCORE

Laval University, August 26, 2017 – For a second week in a row, the Rouge et Or players were defensive, dominating the Vert & Or de Sherbrooke by 40-5 on Saturday night at the TELUS-Laval University stadium.

Including last week’s playoff game, Laval have still not awarded a touchdown to their opponents so far this season. What’s more, their defensive led to at least 10 points in the first half on Saturday, thanks to two timely interceptions.

The Rouge et Or attack also had good moments, especially at the end of the first half, when the group led by Hugo Richard registered two majors in less than a minute. Richard had a strong match, as shown by his 29 assists completed in 41 attempts (70.7%) for 361 yards and three touchdowns.

As a start, the Rouge et Or has done its job well. But Glen Constantin saw things differently. “I am very happy with the victory, there were good performances and beautiful games, but it was a little disjointed. If one is to aspire to the great honors, it will be necessary to clean this, and that is normal. It’s not a question of score, it’s the process. We will have to be more efficient in our execution,” analyzed the coach.

It was the kick-offs that made a splash at the start of the match, when neither team managed to find their rhythm in attack. After a touchdown of safety conceded to the Red and Gold, a powerful release of Mathieu Hébert gave a simple to the visitors. Then, at the end of the quarter, David Côté made his first placement in the university ranks for a distance of 15 yards, accentuating the R and O lead to 5-1 after 15 minutes.

Laval increased their lead following two flip-flops at the start of the second quarter. After an interception of Gabriel Ouellet, first, Côté added another placement, this one on 42 yards. Then, just five minutes later, Hugo Richard scored the first major of the game on a one-yard course, while Marc-Olivier Simard had given the Reds back another intercept a few moments earlier. The score was then 15-1.

After a kick by Mathieu Hébert, Vincent Alarie-Tardif and Étienne Moisan each collected a Hugo Richard ball for touchdowns, all in the last minute of the first half. Fourteen points that hurt Green and Gold, while the half-time score was 29-4.

Hébert got another one early in the second half, then Côté went from a successful third place in as many attempts at the end of the third quarter that was 32-5.

Finally, in the final seconds of the meeting, Richard joined Alexandre Savard deeply in the red zone to bring the mark to 39-5. A simple one on David Côté’s subsequent kick-off rounded the score to 40-5, the final score.

Laval had 537 yards in attack, against 334 for the Vert & Or.

The Rouge et Or will play its next two meetings on the road. They will travel first to McGill on Friday night at 7 pm to cross the line with the Redmen, for whom it will be a first game this year. The following Saturday, it was with the Carabins de Montreal (1-0) that the Reds had an appointment, that is September 9 at 2 pm at the CEPSUM.

Laval will then enjoy a week off, before receiving the visit of the Concordia Stingers (0-1) on Sunday, September 24 from 13h. Tickets for this event are available online or at the Rouge et Or Box Office at 418 656-FOOT (3668).

Another team safety for Saint Mary’s and a 63-yard pass and catch touchdown from Scott to receiver Archelaus Jack (Toronto, Ont.)  pushed the Huskies up 22-7 halfway thru the second quarter.

StFX falls to 0-1 and hosts 0-0 Mount Allison September 1st at 7pm in Week 2.

Montreal (37), Concordia (19)

BOX SCORE

Montreal, August 26, 2017 – On Friday night at the Loyola campus, the University of Montreal Carabins football team won its first victory of the season by winning 37-19 against the Concordia Stingers. The Blues exploded in attack in the first half and the defensive held firm during a renewed energy in the fourth quarter in order to open their season on a good note.

“We started well with good sequences in attack. Even if we give credit to the Stingers in the second half, we must believe that we thought the match was already over at that time. We will have to learn things from this lesson, “said Carabins head coach Danny Maciocia. “Despite this, it is an interesting performance, especially after such a short training camp. “

The Stingers’ defense began the duel by stopping the Blues deep in their zone on a third try and less than a rod to cross, from the first moments of the match. However, the Carabins  prevented their opponents from entering the end zone. Forced to make a field goal, Concordia took the lead 3-0.

Samuel Caron (Civil Engineering, Polytechnique) quickly led his offensive in the pay zone and concluded with a touchdown pass to Kevin Kaya (Preparatory Year). The Carabins added a few moments later when Caron launched a long pass in the right-hand corner of the end zone to Raphaël Major-Dagenais (Preparatory Year) who made a beautiful catch for the major. It was a first career touchdown for the two young recipients of UdeM.

The two teams traded kicks in the second quarter, including 41-yards for Louis-Philippe Simoneau (Arts and Sciences) in the blue-white-black men’s camp. Two touchdowns completed the score and the Blues led 19-3 before retreating to the locker room.

The Montreal defense forced the locals to offer a third touchdown on the return of the half. On the push that followed, Caron joined Régis Cibasu (Administration, HEC Montréal) three times, the last for the major. Montreal led by 24 points. Ten minutes later, while all believed in Simoneau’s second placing, it was Major-Dagenais who decamped with the ball over 14 yards to register his second touchdown of the encounter, all on a fake game made at perfection.

“I did not know if I could reach the goal area, at some point on such a game I had to improvise and I was able to take advantage of the openings. “

The Stingers managed to break through the wall of the Blues by scoring their first touchdown of the duel in the fourth quarter. After a few defensive penalties, Jean-Guy Rimpel crossed the last rod missing to add seven points to the table. That same Rimpel re-attacked three minutes later by completing a quick offensive sequence for Concordia. The Stingers continued to show their teeth at the end of the match, but the Carabins held on.

In the victory, Samuel Caron once again illustrated. A quarter of the Carabins completed 27 of his 38 assists for 338 yards and three touchdowns.

“At the beginning of the match, it was a bit fast, it’s often the case at the beginning of the season,” said Caron. We have left several games on the field, we will have to work hard to better execute for our next game. “

Trenton Miller finished the night with 24 assists in 39 and 368 yards. Passengers Louis-Mathieu Normandin (Administration, HEC Montréal) and Régis Cibasu collected seven receptions each for 80- and 76-yard winnings, while Gabriel Parent (Certificate in Addictions) won 96 yards 19 litters.

It was also the evening of second-year player Raphael Major-Dagenais who collected his first two career touchdowns while accumulating 95 yards out of five catches. The agile receiver of the Carabins has impressed many by becoming a dangerous weapon very early in the encounter. He added 63 yards to the count by returning six kicks.

“I am pleased to have been able to seize the various opportunities that were available to me tonight,” said Major-Dagenais. I have to keep working to continue in the same direction. You may not know him, but I knew he could play several games like he did tonight, Caro added about his teammate. “

The Carabins will already enjoy a week off before receiving the Rouge et Or de Laval at the CEPSUM on Saturday, September 9th at 2 pm.

HAMILTON (August 25, 2017) – The McMaster Marauders secured a 22-10 preseason non-conference U SPORTS football victory over the Saskatchewan Huskies on Friday night at Ron Joyce Stadium in Hamilton.

McMaster’s Jackson White threw for 131 yards and hit Brett Ledingham for the game’s only passing touchdown in the second quarter.  Second-year running back Jordan Lyons  punched in a three-yard touchdown with 54 seconds remaining in the game.

Adam Preocanin was two for three in field goal attempts, registering his longest at 25 yards. Preocanin also missed a 47-yard attempt.

Saskatchewan’s Colton Klassen had a game high 115 yards rushing (on 11 carries) while McMaster’s Justice Allin posted 89 yards on 13 carries. Klassen scampered for 50 yards for the Huskies on the opening play of the game setting up an eventual eventual one-yard touchdown rush by Mason Nyus. That score put Saskatchewan on the board with a 7-0 score just minutes into the game.

McMaster scored 13 second-quarter points in a span of six minutes, which turned the game’s momentum and ultimately handed the Marauders the win. After a Preocanin field goal from 25 yards out, McMaster’s Nolan Putt intercepted a Saskatchewan pass with a short six-yard return. McMaster didn’t waste any time in capitalizing, with White hitting Ledingham on a 28-yard strike to push the score to 10-7 in the second quarter. Preocanin hit his second field goal from 22 yards to make the game 13-7 with four minutes remaining in the second quarter.

McMaster’s receiving core saw eight players contribute, with Tommy Nield leading the way with 44 yards receiving on three catches. Saskatchewan’s David Solie was the game’s top receiver with 96 yards on eight catches.

Huskies quarterbacks were a combined 23 for 44 with 256 passing yards. Fourth-year starter Kyle Siemen finished his two quarters of work throwing for 113 yards with 11 completions and one interception. Rookie Mason Nyhus was 12 for 25 with 143 yards passing and three interceptions.

Both teams will open the regular season next week. The Huskies travel to Winnipeg to meet the Manitoba Bisons to open the Canada West season on September 1, while the Marauders visit the Carleton Ravens in Ottawa on September 3 to open the OUA season.

Game Notes: This was the first time McMaster has hosted a preseason game at Ron Joyce Stadium. The last time the Marauders hosted a preseason tilt was in 1994 at the old Les Prince Field vs. Bishop’s University. It was the first ever meeting between McMaster and Saskatchewan in exhibition or regular season play.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
