54th Annual Archbishops’ Trophy Game Returns to Empire
VANCOUVER, BC –Notre Dame Jugglers will host the Annual Archbishops’ Trophy game against cross town rivals the Vancouver College Fighting Irish, Friday November 5th 2010 on the turf at the PNE’s Empire Field Stadium.
The game will be the 54th in the annual contest that first started in 1957 on the then natural grass of the original Empire Stadium. The last Archbishops’ Trophy game played in Empire Stadium was a 26-0 victory by Vancouver College in 1988. The series is tied with 26 wins for each school and 1 tie.

The game will also be the last home game in the head coaching career of legendary Notre Dame Coach George Oswald, who has been at the helm of the Jugglers since 1977.
Coach Oswald affectionately nick named the “Joe Paterno of BC High School Football” was the recipient of the Best Back award from the 8th Archbishops’ Trophy game in 1964. Coach Oswald returned to Notre Dame the following fall and began his coaching career. He has spent the last 46 years coaching with the Jugglers. Coach Oswald as head coach, has 17 of the 26 wins to his credit in the series, and has also won 14 Provincial Titles, 8 of them also as the head coach.
Coach Oswald will retire from coaching at the end of the 2010 season. Over the years Coach Oswald has coached such greats as Lui Passaglia, Glen Jackson, Leo Groenewegen, Glenn Steele, Rob Moretto, Dino Bucciol, Dana Pemberton, David Mattiazzo and Stephen Spagnuolo.
Notre Dame High School will host a homecoming event post game at the school.
Prior to the Archbishops’ Trophy Game, Empire Field Stadium, will see Saint Thomas More of Burnaby take on, Holy Cross of Surrey in the “Pepsi Bowl”, the annual grudge match between the cross river rivals. Kickoff will be at 5:00 PM.
