(by John Metcalfe – High School Football)
St. Thomas More receiver Angus Button latched onto scoring passes of 7 and 26 yards from Bishop Tonnos pivot Alex Petty to lead the West over the East 14-6 in the 25th edition of the Steel City Bowl. Edin Bosnjakovic of Sir Winston Churchill pounced on a Petty fumble in the end zone for the East’s lone score. Anthony Murphy of Sir John A. Macdonald converted both West majors.
The All Star contest, which brings together players from the Hamilton Wentworth Interscholastic Athletic Council (Hamilton Public) and Hamilton Wentworth Catholic Athletic Association, saw both teams lead by McMaster bench boss Stefan Ptaszek and other McMaster coaches and Marauder players.
For his efforts, Petty was named the M.V.P. for the West squad while Button earned Top Receiver honours for the West side. A complete listing of game honours and game statistics is shown below.
The organizing committee of Bonnie Griffin, Ray Jones, Mike Morden, Mike Morton, Dean Mougenot and Pam Mullholland were recognized for their efforts in organizing this event with special kudos reserved for Dennis Griffin and Bob Morreale who have been with the Steel City Bowl for all 25 years! It is not known what form the game will take going forward, however, the annual event has given players from both Hamilton school boards to play together and in the last few years, get a firsthand look at what C.I.S. Coaches expect in order for students to make the jump to the next level of play.
