Western Mustangs offensive linemen Shane Bergman and Eric Armitage were both selected in the annual Canadian Football League Draft held earlier today. The two linemen become the 25th and 26th Western Mustangs players to be selected in the CFL Draft since 2000.
Bergman became the first Mustang chosen on the day as he was selected by the Calgary Stampeders in the sixth round, 48th overall, in Monday’s draft. Armitage was picked in the seventh round, 56th overall, by the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
Both linemen were key parts of a Mustangs offence that was among the best in the nation in 2012, ranking third in points per game (40.9) and total yards per game (535.1) while leading the nation in rushing yards per game, averaging 289.1 per contest. The team also produced the CIS’ leading rusher in Garret Sanvido, who ran for 1,001 yards and 13 touchdowns in only seven games.
Bergman, a King’s College student from Teeterville, Ontario, is an imposing figure on the Mustangs line standing in at 6’7” and weighing 352 pounds is one of the most physically dominating players in the OUA.
Armitage, also a King’s College student from Denfield, Ontario, was named an OUA All-Star for the first time in 2012, earning a spot on the Second Team with his standout play this season.
“It’s always good to see our players drafted,” said Mustangs head coach Greg Marshall. “It reflects the coaching they received from our staff here and the hard work they’ve put in with the team so far.”
The pair of Mustangs players were two of a record 44 CIS players selected on Monday, making up 73.3 percent of all players drafted.
Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
